Rumor: PS3 80GB Already In The Wild

Is the 80 GB version of the PLAYSTATION 3 coming sooner than previously thought? It's possible.

We first broke news of the "elite" version of the PS3 nearly a month ago, based on a filing with the Federal Communications Commission and a tip from a reader, the first indication a new version was on the way.

Adding more fuel to the fire was Sony Computer Entertainment America's decision to phase out the 20GB model and Sony spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka confirming that the company was looking at larger hard disks.

Then this shot, of which we are rightly suspicious but believe to be (gulp!) real, shows up in my mailbox showing a new model number (98004) and a larger hard drive spec (80 gigabytes/80 gigaoctets). According to the box, virtually nothing has changed save the HDD, and based on the dual-language descriptors, it looks to be a Canadian model.

Based on the quality of the shots and the lack of official confirmation from Sony, we're still calling this rumor for now.

Eternal Sonata also coming to the PS3?

The ESRB is bustling with rumors today with Tron, Art of Fighting and also Eternal Sonata. Way back at Tokyo Game Show 2006 Namco Bandai announced Eternal Sonata (aka Trusty Bell: Chopin’s Dream in Japan) as an Xbox 360 title. According to the ESRB it looks like Eternal Sonata is coming out for the Playstation 3 too. Thinking back to the announcement, Namco Bandai never said that Eternal Sonata was an Xbox 360 exclusive, they just mentioned it was in development for the 360. There is a chance that Eternal Sonata might get a dual release 360/PS3 release, but another possibility is Eternal Sonata will be a time exclusive game on the Xbox 360 similar to Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation. If Eternal Sonata really is coming out for both the PS3 and the X360 would that change your mind about buying an Xbox 360 or encourage you to purchase a Playstation 3?

Downloadable PSone Games Playable On PS3 In May

Following last night's PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update, which added support for downloadable PSone games to be played on the PS3, that we'd see such games appear on the PlayStation Store. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

IGN followed up with Sony to find out exactly when we'll get that capability, a function of the PS3 that was expected by the end of 2006. The response?

We'll be replacing the older PS1 games with fixed versions sometime in May. Once the new games are uploaded, you'll be able to download the games straight to your hard drive and play them from there.
Plus, Sony clarified that users who have already downloaded the PSP-only versions from the store will not have to re-purchase the game for play on the PS3. Now, if we could just get some decent PSone games...

New DMC4 info -- 1080p @ 60 fps confirmed.

The hands on report from PSM3 UK or PSM UK or whatever the **** it's called, made note that the PS3 version was running at 1080p resolution at ofcourse, 60 fps.

There are scans floating around but here is new stuff.

-The game is said to be long, the longest DMC yet. The bestiary is larger than all previous games combined.

-Both Nero and Dante are playable. However, Nero is the focus so Dante in DMC4 is a replica of his DMC3 combo system, but this time they've added instant 'style' switching to the instant weapon switching. They also updated the animations. (For the people that want to bitch, Dante isn't the highlight, Nero is the focus. So don't bust a cherry about him havin some re-used combat from DMC3)

-1080p / 60 fps

-Hands on impressions let them fight against Bariel and the twin frost enemies. Says, each boss has to be killed in a unique way. (none of that god of war / shenmue shit either, apparently it has to deal with using the devil arm in unique instances -- for example, "slamming the twin frost demons together via devil arm to finish them off)

And here's the shit the article posted, taken from Razma from IGN.

-- Dante is approaching 40. I don't know if it's literally 40 or the character designer was told to model a guy appearing to be that age.

-"Dante is getting too powerful" says Hiroyuki Kobayahi, and said that "making him the main character would take all the challenge outta the game".

-PSM prefer Nero over Dante

-This game ran at 1080p and 60fps when they played it.
-DMC4 is a mixture of the best bits of DMC1 and DMC3:SE

-gameplay is very polished, solid, and responsive, it shames games like Genji : Dawn of Blade (this doesn't really say much, but sure -- sounds good)

-Two levels were playable, the seaside setting level with the docks, and the Ice level with the enormous gothic cathedral and snow capped mountains.

-Frosts are hard mofos to kill. They can disappear, recharge their health by freezing themselves, and when they freeze, their health is revived almost to the stage when you first started fighting them.
-The move "accelorator" is very handy in this battle, since its "spewing flames and steam" out of the sword.

-Demon arm could be used to slam the frosts.

-Plenty of green orbs spew out if you successfully defeat Frosts.

-Press "select" for neros taunt, in which he says "scum"(Hint to Vergil and Nero similarity?)

-Variel is now known as Berias?

-Nero mocks him by saying "he doesnt tan"

-Berias's face is his weak point. Nero is capable of double jumping to his face.

-When he gets pissed, he sends nero flying backwards with a deafening roar.
-Using guns eventually start ti diminish ihis flames.

-Accelarator gives it the slight edge of doing extra damage(Sword goes firey red when he puts that petrol handle down)

Neros moves:
-Grim Grip: Lets neo stretch out his arm like the bendy one outta fantasic four. he can chuck enemies around, but its main use is reaching distant objects.
Fly Over: While Dante is stuck to the ground - Excluding cutscenes where he regularly darts up the side of buildings, Nero can use the grim grip to pull himself across caverneous gaps. You can do this at set points,so keep an eye out for the blue markers.
-Devil Bringer:Not only does this contiune the fine capcom tradition of "arms that do stuff"(God Hand, Onimusha), but happens to be one of the most interesting things in the game. It gives nero an extra egde over Dante in combat.
-The Red Queen: Neros sword is bettar than neros because it has a motorcycle rev in the handle, if you press R2 in time with your attacks he revs until it glows red, which unleashes nasty flame attacks that get steadily more damaging, so long as you keep your rhythm.
-Another shot of CGI Nero Vs Dante, except this time, without pointing guns at each other, they are weilding their swords.

More on Bigger PS3 Hard Drive

More official comments out of Japan regarding a PlayStation 3 with a larger hard drive have surfaced today, via Reuters.

"For users who vigorously store (games and other entertainment content) in the PS3, 20-giga [hard drive] is probably going to be too small, and even 60-giga may not be big enough eventually," said Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka.

Rumors have abounded that Sony could introduce an 80GB hard drive-equipped PS3, but there is no confirmation on whether or not such a product would come to market.

He added that other component tweaks outside of a hard drive upgrade are also a possibility. “We are not likely to change its core components and functions such as the Cell, RSX [graphics processor], Blu-ray drive and network capability. But outside that realm, addition and deletion is quite possible.”

A Bloomberg report recently quoted Fukuoka as saying that Sony is "considering" a larger hard drive for PS3.

Sony has already made changes to the PS3, such as the omission of the PS2 Emotion Engine in European PS3 models, which is used for backwards compatibility, in favor of software-emulated back-compat.

Chipmaker IBM recently announced that production of the PS3’s Cell processor had moved from 90nm to 65nm. SCEA also discontinued the $499 20GB PS3 model in North America, leaving only the top-end $599 60GB console.

Later this month, Microsoft will be releasing the Xbox 360 Elite, which will feature HDMI support and a 120GB hard drive for $479.

Sony shares recently shot up on the back of analyst consensus which said that the PS3 will drive company earnings this business year.

A SCEA rep said today in a prepared statement to Next-Gen, "We are constantly looking at new technologies, services and configurations to meet the evolving needs of our PlayStation gamers, but at this time we have no announcement regarding any changes in our PS3 product offering in North America."

Sony's recovery and a new PS3 model?

Last fiscal year, Sony announced that their profits dropped by a massive $1.69 billion, but soon after this announcement the company quickly stated that they expected profits to improve significantly. And they had a reason to be confident.

Recently Gamasutra released a report stating that analysts predict a profit increase of 500% or $3.37 billion. The report cites strong LCD HDTV sales, and up to 10 million PlayStation 3s shipped with increased demand.

A few hours after the article was released Sony contacted the group of analysts denying the 10 million consoles shipment numbers and stated that the company is looking into introducing a "model with a bigger hard disk.”

No further details have been released about the new model but this could end up being the rumored 80GB model.
